A shocked seventy year old grandmother was fortunate to survive an accident after she got hit by the Ghan train on the Ilparpa Road crossing. She was on her way to the hospital that day. Gwen Rogers was on the Ilparpa road when she approached the crossing, she looked to her left and she looked the other way, but it was too late when she heard the train horns.

According to the town’s train officials, the Ghan train was traveling at forty seven kilometers per hour, which was seven kilometers over the limit. There have been a number of complaints from motorists over the safety issues on the Ilparpa crossing. Justice Chris Burns had been receiving a lot of complaints regarding the intersection’s safety devices since 2004.

For many years motorist’s have been clamoring for improving the safety on the intersection. The intersection has warning signs but it lacks a boom gate, lights and bells to up the safety.
